Description:This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies.
This was a double interview with Carolina Grefa- first Wilma talked to her about being a 'partera' and then Nilo asked her about her lifestory, and in particularly about the lady called Esther Sevilla, who used to exploit the Kichwa living along the Napo river for gold mining. The interviews were quite well, even though Wilma was not prepared, despite the fact she watched another pregenancy-care related intreview, with Maria Chimbo, the day before this, and noted down many questions. She was indecisive and forgetting what to ask, but I guess it's ok as well, and we still got half an hour of decent information. The second interview, with Nilo (files _04 to _07), was more lively, and run more like a fluid conversation. All the recording was done at Carolina and Arturo's house. We have worked with them before for the plant video. Haven't checked the audio yet, there were some strange noises before we started, but during the intreview the microphone seemed to preform fine. The main mic was the wireless Seinheisser ew100, and the shotgun Rode NTG2 was mounted on the camera, but I'm not sure I will use it, especially for the first interview, for which I left the dead cat on it. Pictures pertaining to this section were all taken by Nilo with my Fuji camera. In _02 Carolina makes joking comments about the Secoya, which shouldn't be viewed by general public not to create wrong impression of her - hence this recording is marked with access protocol S. Camera: CanonXA10, microphones: Sennheisser ew100 wireless/Rode NTG2, L audio channel duplicated to streo in the end (that of Sennheisser mic). For now, the only eaf files available are _01, _02, _03 and _05 - these have been transcribed, translated and revised. The others are still pending revision.
