Description:This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies.
We interviewed Carmela, the grandmother of Edwin's girlfriend. The house we went to was above the Kanambu community, maybe a 20 minute walk, towards the end up the hill. We were in the kitchen, which was a separate building, with an impressive view over the whole valley. They had a nice fireplace (although this is probably not the right word), with a pot with guayusa (wayusa) leaves boling into a tasty, smoke-tasting drink as we spoke. The kitechen building had a leaf roof, while the house next-door was more "modern", with tin roof and all. The interview was with the old lady, probably over 80 years old. She was talking to her daughter (who also sometimes contributed to the intreview) in Kichwa, and there were also grandchildren (or grand-grand children, one little girl, and the other one maybe around 10 yrs old), who were talked to in Spanish, but than Edwin's girlfriend talks Kichwa as well. when we went there, however, she hardly said anything. I think the interview was fluid, and the lady was talking a lot, not even letting Edwin say much, which is kind of good, as he tends to overtake quite a lot. Camera: CanonXA10, microphones: Rode NTG2, AT825 Lavalier For now, only files _01 and _02 from this bundle are archived, since only for them the translation and transcription has been revised. There is a total of eight recordings in this bundle.
