Description: | This was the first attempt at retelling the pear story, also with nian1. The idea was to track reference in discourse. I thought it would be better to use a video rather than pictures series such as those in Potsdam QUIS (Task 19), since the goal of both task was eliciting a coherent narrative. I have first asked other PhD students at SOAS how they have used the story, and there were suggestions for both having a consultant tell it to me as (s)he watches the video (Teresa Poeta) and to have it retell it to another native speaker after (s)he watched the whole thing (Also TP, and everyone else I asked). What I was interested in is event tracking, particularly with evidentials. Looking back at it after having segmented the text, nian1's narrative is actually quite concise - he skims over quite a few details (I didn't give any intruction as to what he should focus on), and only talks about events on the main storyline, it seems (all, or almost all cast with -sha). Will be interesting to compare this to him retelling the story to someone else. Also, nian1 was narrating as seeing the story for the first time. This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies. | ||
