| Description: | This project is a part of PhD dissertation fieldwork, supported by the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (IGS00166). The dissertation itself will focus on evidentiality in the language, but the documentation aims to encompass as broad a set of linguistic and cultural practices as possible. Most interviews were carried out by native Kichwa researchers, and are therefore monolingual in Kichwa. The topics addressed cover the recent history of the Amazonian Kichwa, folktales, everyday life and ceremonies. | |
| This was the opening of the comunal house ("casa comunal") for the Nuevo Paraíso community. The event was much awaited, since the house was under construction for almost two years - initiated in Marcos Ledesma's period as president, it was in some way tied to the interim president who took over when Marcos wasn't preforming - Saul Simbaña. This is why his stepping down took ages - he was supposed to call new elections ever since I got here in May. Those have finally happened some 3 weeks ago, but the new president, Darío Andy, and the other new authorities, still haven´t been sworn in. The event happened on a Friday, and all the "socios" of the community had to contribute 10$, which is a lot of money here, to buy food and provisions for the event. They came in early, around 8pm, to cook the food and prepare, and of course dancing and driking was supposed to follow. The parroquial authorities came, too, to inaugurate the house, since it was built with parroquial, or regional funding, I´m not too sure. But it´s important to know that they are now in the period of heated political campaign, before the next regional elections in February 2013. I recorded some of the gathering before the innauguration - finding it easier to do now that everyone knows me. I think that the one that can be particularly good is the one when Saul Simbaña talks just before cutting the ribbon - he had no microphone, so this is the first example of official discourse without a horrific mic distortion. Plus Saul is not a teacher or anything of that sort, so his official discourse is likely to me much less rehearsed than the usual one.
