Description:This recording is a continuation of an interview with Ahslla (Abner) Aikanã, who tells about her experiences, aspirations and thoughts in connection with being a transgender, homosexual, indigenous woman, moving between her home village and the city, confronted with connected changes. Ahslla, born as a man, Abner, in the Aikanã village Gleba, has always considered herself a woman. Regardless of gossip and ostracism in her own community and outside of it, she over the years has become more open about her transsexuality. At the time I met Ahslla, she would spend most of the day sitting outside her family’s wooden house, observing the events in the village, conversing with her mother and aunt, her view often drifting into the distance, imagining and dreaming. The only time she would move from this safe and comfortable space, is when washing clothes in the nearby creek, or taking the school bus to the nearby town Chupinguaia in the afternoon. She likes to dress-up, wearing short pants and make-up, dye her hair and paint her finger and toe nails in bright colours. She is her mother’s best friend and helping hand managing the typical “female” household chores, like washing, cleaning and cooking and making sure that her smaller brothers are well cared for. In a previous 2-hours long interview in October 2013, I talked with Ahslla about her life as an indigenous transsexual in a rural area of Rondônia, about difficulties she faces in the village and outside, about religion, attitudes, her relationship to her mother, about sexuality, her body and future plans. On our last field trip, in Aug-Sept 2014, I decided to visit Ahslla, together with her mother, in the town Chupinguaia. She had moved away from the village and was renting a room in a quarter mainly inhabited by workers from the nearby slaughterhouse. She had enrolled in a local training course to become a hairdresser and I used the opportunity to record her daily life on video. In our second, long interview, Ahslla talked about life in the city, new challenges, adventures and experiences, desires and her shifting and ‘contested’ identity as an indigenous transsexual. While she missed her family and home, the creek to bathe, the cool air of the forest, she hardly ever feels like returning to her community. This very intimate recording, however, was done back in Gleba. Documenting Ahslla’s life history opens new perspectives on gender and sociality for indigenous and Amazonian studies.
