Description:Maria Tadeu is making the black and red paint, colours typically used for body painting or decoration, to paint the mortar. The black paint derives from the burned, scraped and pounded bark of a tree, the red ink is pounded from the fruits of what the Aikanã call tara, or urucum (annatto) plant (Bixa orellana). While tara is also used for red body paint, the black body paint usually derives from the green fruits of the genipapo, or aru in Aikanã (Genipa americana).
