The "baptism" of the pequi
Contributor (compiler):Bruna Franchetto
Coverage:Brazil
Description:The chief Ahukaka (Tahukula) knows (among some few old men) the (magic) spells called hitsindzoho and translated in local portuguese as "batismo (baptism)". Hitsindzoho is performed ritually in the center of the village plaza by a chief who knows the long formulaic spells of this genre. The rythm and versification, as well as the vocabulary are special of this kind of formal discourse. The "baptism" is performed when the first pequi fruits or the first corn are ready for the consume by the community. In this case, the performer stands in front of some pequi fruits or in front of a pan containing pequi porridge (mingau de pequi). The spells are performed in these occasions in order to guarantee a good production of good fruits. The spells are built around structured references to the origin myth (The Beginning of the Pequi).
