Description:ENGLISH: Trumai speakers are looking for eggs of river turtles in a particular location in the Xingu reserve. There, they find eggs cracked by a fox, and the remains of river turtles that were eaten by a jaguar (most likely, it is the "burrow" of the jaguar). A Trumai woman talks about the behaviour of jaguars. Unfortunately the weather became windy and that caused some noises in the recording. Nevertheless, the recording is interesting for the information it contains. The video was recorded by a Trumai young man. ----- PORTUGUÊS: Falantes de Trumai procuram ovos de tracajá em um local no Xingu. Lá encontram ovos rachados por uma raposa e restos de tracajá que foram comidos por uma onça (provavelmente trata-se da "moradia" de uma onça). Uma mulher Trumai fala sobre o comportamento das onças. Infelizmente havia vento e isso causou um pouco de barulho na gravação. Mesmo assim, a gravação é interessante pela informação que contém. O vídeo foi filmado por um jovem Trumai.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Trumai speakers go looking for eggs of river turtles. A Trumai woman talks about the river turtles and other things they find during the trip.
The main speaker (an old lady) talks in Trumai. The other people in the video (children and young people) speak in Portuguese
The main talk is performed by a woman, Speaker12.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
Speaker12 is a native speaker of Trumai. Both her parents were Trumai. She and her brother are the last descendents of the Awaldat group, a Trumai subdivision that used to speak a different dialect of the language. However, this dialect seems to have disappeared (Speaker12's way of speaking is similar to the way of speaking of the other Trumai individuals). Her late husband was Kayabi. She lives with her son and daughter-in-law and has several grandchildren. She is middle-aged (50 or more).
