Description: The recording shows SD and SR together with several Awetí on a bicycle trip to the lake where the Awetí collect a water plant from which salt is made. The trip took place in the late morning.

This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.

The session shows SD, SR and several young Awetí men and women going by bicycle to the salt lake where they want to film how the Awetí collect, dry and burn a water plant. From the ashes of this plant salt is made. Salt is the traditional product primarily made by the Awetí and used for trading with goods of the other Xingu people.

Much Awetí, even with the researcher SD. He sometimes speaks in Portuguese, and sometimes other participants speak Portuguese to the researcher.

During the bicycle trip the participants engage in basic conversation (predominantly in Portuguese).

151 is the third child (second son) of the main chief of the village, 146, and his first wive, 147. He is not married yet and lives in his father's house. He is one of the main consultirs of the Awetí project, being the most skilled compter user and best literate (with 018) in the village.

042 is one of the principal shamans of the Awetí village. At the same time he is the brother-in-law of 083, one of the most prestigious men in the village. There are very strong family ties between these two houses due to the double cross-cousin constellation between the children of 042 and 083. 042 is the son of 043 and 044, the oldest cuple of the village. On the other hand, 157, the father of the current chief 146, claims that 042 is his illigitimate son, therefore he is considered a brother of 146 and also calls SD as 'younger brother'.

073 is the second son and child of 030 and 074.

149 is the oldest child (son) of the main chief of the village, 146, and his first wive, 147. He is not married yet and lives in his father's house. Currently he is being trained to be a local health's agent.

132 is a half-brother of 118 and 074, son of the Trumai 075. He is married to 019, a sister of 018, one of the teachers. His mother, 076, is now married to the Kamayurá 077. He is a specialist in house-building (as is his step-father 077) and from 2003 on started to be trained as a singer. Respected by many due to his calm mood.

001 lived in the village until 2003. He is an older one of the many sons of 009 (Kamayurá) and 010, who left the village in 2002. Of his family, only 018 and his sister 019 (married to 132) stayed in the main village. 001 is one of the best speaers of Portuguese among the Awetí.

003 is the oldest son of Kanalawa and Tsehu. In 2002 he is not married yet.

043 is the oldest man in the village. His wife 044 is also still alive. They have 4 children in the village (at least three other died), two men (042 and 065) and the two wifes of 085 (060 and 064). 043 belongs to a not very prestigious family within the Awetí community. He does not have the formal education of people like 157 who belongs to a traditional family of chiefs. The Xingu-society used to be organized strictly hierarchically, and only people from "upper-class"-families received a formation as story-teller and keeper of traditions. 043, though, has great knowledge of herbal medicine and does have the reputation of being a powerful shaman.

002 lived in the village until 2003. She is marreid to 001, an older one of the many sons of 009 (Kamayurá) and 010, who left the village in 2002. 002 has several children, 003 and 004 among them.

147 is the daughter of a Kamayurá chief and the first wife of the Awetí chief 146 with whom she has five children. She has got a good knowledge of Portuguese and, due to this competence, is one of the few women who enters directly in contact with the researchers. She is a good informant for cultural matters.

150 is the oldest daughter of 146 and his older wife 147. She still lives with her family in her father's house.

152 is 146 and 147's younger daughter.
