Description:An exhaustive longer session: 042 demonstrates the traditional form of collective harvesting of corn. He calls the community to participate, only some younger members attend. They go to his corn field close to tsalawa, the women do the actual harvesting, the men make a fire and enjoy themselves. In the village part of the corn is carried to the center (see similar session corn_center) and another part is used in 042's house to prepair a large flat cake which is also carried to the center and consumed by many men. The participating younger village members are then scarified.
This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
This session documents almost a day of public activities in connection with the harvesting of corn. The main person, 042, wanted to give a complete account of the traditions involved with corn harvesting. In the morning, 042 calls for volunteers to participate in the harvesting of his last corn field. Several members of the community, especially younger ones, travel by bike and by foot to the field. There, the women harvest the corn, 042 cleans the way, cuts the corn plants. The young men make a fire and all eat some corn in the field. Back in the village, 042 shares a part of the corn with the village. Some of the corn is roasted on a fire and consumed by men in the center. In 042's house, a large corn cake is prepaired. It is carried to the center and eaten by children and men. All young who have eaten of the corn will then be scarified. Several dialogues and explanations by 042 should be transcribed. 065 is the youngest child of 043 and 044, the oldest couple of the village. He is married to 128 and has three children with her :130 (born 1996), 214 (born 1999) and 215 (born 2001). He gained much respect when he stopped living with some of his relatives (his older brother 042 or his uncle 083) and built his own house in 2004.
House-building is a task carried out by men. The owner of the new house pays the house-builders with food which is distributed in the village centre after the work has been done.

150 is the oldest daughter of 146 and his older wife 147. She still lives with her family in her father's house.
143 is a son of 077 and his wife 076. He continues most time in the Awetí village although his father (and in 2006 even his mother) left to the Kamayurá village. He made a longer vosot to Rio de Janeiro in 1998, by an invitation from a chilene film team.
073 is the second son and child of 030 and 074.
151 is the third child (second son) of the main chief of the village, 146, and his first wive, 147. He is not married yet and lives in his father's house. He is one of the main consultirs of the Awetí project, being the most skilled compter user and best literate (with 018) in the village.
030 is a family father and oldest son of 026. With his wife 074 he has many children, including the adult or almost adult 078 (man) 073 (boy) 079 (woman) 080 (girl). As his grandfather (same name!) was an important chief, he is highly respected even by the chief 146 and considered to be one of the leaders of the village.
132 is a half-brother of 118 and 074, son of the Trumai 075. He is married to 019, a sister of 018, one of the teachers. His mother, 076, is now married to the Kamayurá 077. He is a specialist in house-building (as is his step-father 077) and from 2003 on started to be trained as a singer. Respected by many due to his calm mood.

042 is one of the principal shamans of the Awetí village. At the same time he is the brother-in-law of 083, one of the most prestigious men in the village. There are very strong family ties between these two houses due to the double cross-cousin constellation between the children of 042 and 083. 042 is the son of 043 and 044, the oldest cuple of the village. On the other hand, 157, the father of the current chief 146, claims that 042 is his illigitimate son, therefore he is considered a brother of 146 and also calls SD as 'younger brother'.
146 is the main chief of the village. His father, 157, left the village in the seventies, giving up his chief-hood. 146 grew up with the Kamayurá, got in contact with the brazilian air-force and moved outside the village for some years in order to study and eventually take over a position in the self-administration of the Park. He then met his older wife (147) at the Kamayurá and decided to go back into the Park before finishing his studies. Later he married 147's younger sister, 148. Both do not speak (but understand) Awetí. When 146's father was asked to come back as a chief, he declined, but suggested his oldest son, 146, to take the position with his advice. The community constructed a large house around 1996 in order to receive 146 as a real chief. SInce then, he is in charge.
