Description: All different stages of the process of hammock-production, from the harvesting of buriti palm sprouts until the finishing of the knotting of a hammock.

This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.

The various clips were filmed by SD and SX. They are mainly filmed in the house of 118, the main consultants are his wife 121 and their adult daughters 119 and 122. Some scenes are in the house of 030, were his wife 074 and their daughter 080 also produce hammocks.

121 is the wife of 118 and mother of many children, 119 and 122 among them who are married with 085, one of the teachers. She is a half sister of 083, story teller and father of 085. She is a specialist in producing mats (esteiras) and hammocks.

074 is the wife of 030 and mother of many children, among them the boys 078 and 073 and the girls 079 and 080. As most members of that family, she is a specialist in producing traditional products as hammocks and mats.

119 is the first daughter of 118 and 121. She married around 2001 with 085, one of the teachers, as later her sister 122. In the following years they all still lived with her family.

122 is the second daughter of 118 and 121. As her elder sister 119 before her, she married around 2003 with 085, one of the teachers. in the following years they all still lived with her family.

080 is the second daughter and fourth child of 030 and 074.

SX was a temporary co-worker of the Awetí project.
