This project aims at the documentation of the Awetí Language and aspects of the Awetí culture. Awetí is a tupian language of a small speech community of the same name at the southern edge of the Amazon rain forest, in the Xingú reserve, Mato Grosso, central Brazil. The project was funded December 2000--April 2006 by the VolkswagenStiftung in the Documentation of Endangered Languages Programme (DOBES). The principal researcher, Sebastian Drude, initianted his research among the Aweti in 1998. Sabine Reiter participated as a freelancer in 2001 and as research assistant (including conducting field research) from 2002 on. The Awetí participated intensively in the project. At least one person of each houshold provided individual texts, the community agreed to be documented in day-to-day activities and during special events such as rituals. Several Awetí got involved in the further processing of the documentation data, especially by assisting in the creation of transcriptions and translations during the 9 field trips and in 8 visits of two to three speakers in Belém or Canarana.
010 tells about her childhood, the death of her father, her getting to know her Kamayurá husband and the birth of her children and and death of some of them. At the end of her narrative she is asked by Sebastian to add more information on the number of Awetí who died and on the whites she can remember to have visited the Awetí village. In his concluding remarks Sebastian gives a brief summary of what he understood and thanks 010 for her narrative.
In the introduction Sebastian gives a short description of the taks in Portuguese which is translated into Awetí by her son 017, the health agent of the village. The whole narrative takes place in Awetí. The questions asked by Sebastian towards the end of the recording are in Portuguese. 010 answers in Awetí since she knows that Sebastian is able to understand most of it. Sebastian uses Portuguese for his concluding remarks. Since 010 has a basic knowledge of this language there is no further translation.
010 is the mother of 018, one of the two school teachers, who are the most important Awetí consultants for the research team. Since 018 has become a friend, Sebastian has been integrated into his family which was the most numerous in the village until 2003, when they left. Several times during her narrative 010 addresses to Sebastian by calling him "son". 017 who translates Sebastian's introductory explanations into Awetí is also a son of 010. 017, unlike the two school teachers, has not been directly involved in the work of the research-team from the beginning, but later he showed much interest he has taken over several important tasks like translating and filming in field trip 2002.

010 is the mother of Teacher, one of the two school teachers who are most closely involved in the work of the documentation project. She is the daughter of 025, a Yawalapiti woman, who was married to an Awetí but lost her husband when 010 was a little girl. 010 grew up among the Awetí. She is married to a Kamayurá and has a great number of children most of which live in the Awetí village.
