Description:The project documents several different aspects of the Marquesan culture (legends, narratives, food preparation, plant medicine, fishing techniques, Marquesan trick languages, songs, dances etc.)
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'consultation', Discursive = 'procedure', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This is a documentary on one form of preparing cooked breadfruit paste. It is shown in detail of how 'ka'aku ma'ita/tokatoka' "white/yellow breadfruit" is prepared by mashing the cooked breadfruit with a stone pestle. It is explained which varieties of breadfruit have to be taken and how they are prepared beforehand. In general the documentary also shows the traditional techniques of preparing cooked breadfruit.
Apart from the main consultants (B, Hi and R) there were a number of observers present which interact rarely in the session. B is the main consultant who explains most of the procedure.
B is fluent in French and Tahitian, also some good basic knowledge of English. He was brought up in the valley of Hakata'o on 'Ua Pou island; until the age of nine he did not attend a school as there were no schools in his valley. He learnt a lot of legends from his grandparents and older people of his valley. When he was a child there was no electricity (ie. TV or radio), and thus story-telling was one of the major attractions during their spare time. He is a primary school teacher.
Apart from her mother tongue she is also fluent in French. R is an active participant in the cultural revival movement often engaged in organising cultural events or guiding tourists around. At the time of the recording R is also engaged in community work being the third deputy of the major of Ua Pou island.
Apart from his mother tongue North Marquesan Hi speaks Tahitian and a little French. He is very knowledgeable concerning traditional food preparation which he still actively practices today. He is one of the remaining Marquesans who still know how to prepare certain traditional Marquesan dishes.
former Ph.D-student at the MPI for Psycholinguistics at the language acquisition section (W.Klein); four field trips to North Marquesas islands (Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou) collecting adult as well as child data
This session is cut together by 7 subsessions of the original recording. A number of sequences were cut out because they were not thought to be relevant for the procedure. The subsessions have the following time codes appearing in order of sequence: subession beginning end 1) 00:33:37.510- 00:38:51.087 2) 00:39:27.710- 00:40:31.739 3) 00:40:36.679-00:41:02.731 4) 00:41:19.300- 00:42:16.792 5) 00:42:21.179- 00:42:13.986, 6) 00:42:41.354-00:43:42.270 7) 00:45:47.540- 00:47:47.588
