Description:A conversation between several people (5 main participants + one little girl, one or two others who said a couple of things, children) in the 'waiting room' of the nursery (i.e. the bench before the entrance). There were many people sitting there, waiting for their turn; some were following the conversation and sometimes smiled, laughed, or said a word or two. The conversation was sometimes very enthusiastic.
A project for the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language, based on fieldwork. It started in 1993 (under Dr. Spike Gildea's Northern Brazilian Cariban Languages Documentatino Project, NSF grant DBS-9210130) and continues to the present.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'conversation', Discursive = 'Unspecified', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This session contains part of a conversation (which had already started when I turned the recorder on, and which continued after I turned it off) between several people who were waiting for their turn at the nursery in Missão Tiriós. The main topic in the beginning is Renato's punishment (he had stabbed another man on the shoulder and almost got him killed; he was publicly whipped for that); they talk about how harsh physical punishment can be, especially in other places, and about another case in which someone had been severely punished..
Only Tiriyó was used hroughout the session.
The various speakers interacted in a (sometimes enthusiastic) conversation; Sérgio simply listened and recorded, saying nothing.
Sérgio Meira is the main researcher in the Tiriyó descriptive project.
Alcino (Tiriyó name: Enkiri) is a 20-ish-year-old young man. I didn't talk directly to him and have no further detailed information about him.
Marciano (Tiriyó name: MInausi) is a 20-ish-year old Tiriyó (maried to Susan) who lives at Missão Tirió. He is an intelligent young man, usually a very good consultant on matters of syntax and semantics.
Idaliana is a 20-ish-year-old woman who worked as a nurse for a while at Missão Tiriós and then in another village.
Zilda is a 20-ish-year old woman. She is Marciano's younger sister.
Susan is a 20-ish-year-old young woman. She is Marciano's wife. She speaks K-Tiriyó (apparently she is from the Tëpu area).
Rafaela is a 8/9-year-old little girl, a speaker of H-Tiriyó.
Sérgio Meira is also the researcher responsible for the project on the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language.
I transcribed this file with Marciano's help, a few days after having recorded it. /r = register /t = Tiriyó text /s = surface morpheme segmentation /m = underlying morpheme segmentation /g = gloss /p = part of speech /i = indexes, keywords /f = free translation /o = original translation /c = comments
The original tape was given to Dick van den Born, who made me an identical copy. I digitized this copy, which is the source for the MPEG file.
