Description:As a young woman, Nicolasa Ortiz had problems with her animals. They would not reproduce and did not live long. She searched for and found a man who could do a ritual to help her. The man took her to the cave at Río Cola, a steep and menacing area where the Río Atoyac is surrounded by cliffs. They went down in the cave with pine torches to visit the spirit that dwelled in the mountain. She agreed to bind herself with the spirit in exchange for success and riches. Her animals abounded after that, but the demon came on horseback for her every night and slept with her. When she or her husband Tereso were steward of the festival, they tried to use the tainted money, but they got sick and died. The Saints don't accept the devil's money for sacred purposes. Nicolasa's brother Nicolás told TCR the story. TCR begins speaking in Spanish, then is reminded to tell the tale in Chatino first, which begins at 0:37. A Spanish retelling follows and begins at 7:21. Audio duration [00:12:12]
