Title:The story of animal spirit companions
0185-The story of animal spirit companions
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Description:It's the festival of Santa Cruz on May 3rd. A man from Piedra Móvil shows up with his son. His son has loads of hair on his chest and cheeks, and they are bragging, acting very macho. A Chatino hanging around with friends drinking mezcal decides to test them by going into the wild to find the animal that is the boy's tono. He travels along the hills in the region and finds nothing. He flies searching (he has transformed into his tono) and gets knocked out of the air by a powerful creature down below along the river at the base of Cerro Neblina. He returns to the festival and reports he found nothing. He says the creature must be in the forest above the village. He goes up and sees a tecolote, a small owl, in a tree and realizes this is the boy's tono. He goes back and jokes with his friends about how the boy's tono is a bird and no tough animal worth bragging about. In contrast, he says that the creature at the base of the mountain is one of the toughest. A Spanish retelling begins at 3:48.Audio duration [00:09:55]
