Title:Two tales of the Cave of Lightning
0185-Two tales of the Cave of Lightning
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:GCG
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2008-01-08
Description:The first tale begins at 1:34. Before that TCR is explaining to GCG that we are looking for skilled orators to contribute to the documentation. GCG mentions some of the details of the first tale he will tell. The first tale of the Cave of Lighning begins with the community sufferring from a great famine and drought. The authorities ask the president for advice, and he tells them a girl in town has tortillas. They speak to her and she says a child from the mountain gave her a handful of maize grains that never run out on her. They throw a party, and the child shows up offering to take them to the cave and its master because there are good things there. The people follow the child from Santa Cruz through San Pedro and La Palma to the Cave of Lightning on Cerro Neblina. Along the way they see the child at certain places doing something or having a certain appearance. The names of these places come from these views of the child. They arrive and the lady of the mountain offers them relief from their suffering. Half of the elders are against it, and they turn into bats (chu kula kweèn) and are sent to their death. The other half live and the rains begin. The second tale begins at 11:38. A family suffers from a poor crop, and the father sends the daughter of 18 years and the son to look for fresh corn. They find little, and the father says his daughter will have to find a spouse. She refuses and runs away into a hole (cave) in the ground with her little dog. She has a tono (animal spirit companion) of lightning. She becomes a saint, the spirit of the Cave of Lightning on Cerro Neblina, where people now go to ask for benefits, good fortune, and good harvests and rain. She is connected with the depths of the seas which send forth their coolness to refresh the world during the rains. She is the same figure visited in the first tale.
