0185-The turtle and the vulture
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2010-07-31
Description:TCR relates a folk tale about why turtles have shells with many plates or sections. A turtle was looking for food, going along slowly, when a vulture asks him what he is up to and how he can gather food moving so slowly. The turtle asks him to take him for a ride so he can see the earth from way above. The vulture asks how the turtle's face feels going fast, and the turtle was staring at the vulture's head. Not thinking, he says his face feels wrinkly and of ugly color. The vulture realizes what he is saying and dives fast. The turtle falls and cracks his shell.Audio duration [00:04:28]
