Description:		TCR relates a story told to him by Antonio Ramírez, a Mixtec man from Putla that TCR met in Matías Romero, Oaxaca. Antonio went around selling mezcal along the coast with mules. One time he went with a young relative. They stopped in Ixtayutla. Antonio told the young man to be careful near the coast because the people are rough there. The young man catches the eye of a young woman. The men then leave to sell their mezcal along the coast, and then they return to Ixtayutla on the way home. The woman wants him, and he says okay. The men later leave to return home, and the woman tells the young man she will meet him on the path. At the meeting place, the young man waits for her but a huge snake appears. He shoots the snake, and reports it to Antonio. Antonio puts a corn husk with salt on it on the young man's head and tells him to run home to safety. Rain clouds appear, and it begins raining. He sees lightning and notices lizards falling from the sky onto his head. Antonio explains that the snake was the woman converted into her tono (animal spirit companion), and the lightning was the girl's father, whose spirit companion was lightning. The salt protected him.
