Description:This text is a description of traditional cultural practices and knowledge about the environment. Before the appearance of machines and modern technology, people used signals in the environment to guide them in many ways. First, ERH explains how people read signs and clues given from plants and animals that would tell them when the rainy season would begin, how consistent it would be, and when a dry spell was coming. Other signs would tell them how the corn harvest would be and where good places to plant chilies were. At 13:38 he relates a story of three scientists traveling in the region who ask for a place to sleep. A Chatino woman offers them lodging and feeds them. She tells them to sleep inside because it is going to rain. They sleep outside because the weather report says it won't rain. They get wet. ERH then explains how people told time using the sun by day and the stars at night. Then he explains how houses used to be made from wood, grass, and vines. He details how locations were chosen, how the house was built in steps with free help from other community members, how the natural spirits were appeased, and how thanks was given to the help. He then talks about traditional clean food and contrasts it with junk food coming in from outside now. He talks about ropemaking and going to festivals and how these have changed. He then discusses how it is good that this knowledge is being documented and archived. This text is very rich and profound in terms of grammar, lexicon, and content. Audio duration [00:41:45]
