Description:In this text ERR tells two short stories: the deer and 500 toads and the coyote and rabbit. He embeds the stories in a personal historical narrative. He discusses the time when he assisted a government worker doing malaria testing in the region. They got along well, and one day while chatting and sorting through papers, the worker told him the tale of 500 toads and the deer. A toad brags to the deer that toads are faster runners than deer. The deer boasts back and challenges the toad to a race. The toad gathers 500 friends and sets them on the field each a meter apart. He convinces the deer to run with closed eyes. The toad deceives the deer this way and gets credit for winning the race. ERR then goes back to the scene where he and the worker are sorting papers. Then the worker tells him to tell a story in return. ERR tells the tale of the coyote and the rabbit. The coyote wants to eat the rabbit, and the rabbit keeps giving excuses for why he should be eaten later and not at that moment. He lies and deceives the coyote, never becoming his food. It is a funny tale. This is a Mesoamerican tale. The relationship between the gullible coyote and crafty rabbiit is a template for many variations of the tale. After that, ERR goes back to his own story in the context of the interaction with the government worker. He then talks about bilingualism and multilingualism in his family.
