| Description: | This zapal tells the story of Bei Ili and her son, Bei Asa. As is a common theme in zapal, destitution forces them to seek a living elsewhere. Bei Asa is sent off to find work. In the big city he finds renown, after putting an end to a conflict with his fighting prowess. When his fame is celebrated at a party, his mother travels from the village to see her son. Ashamed of his mother in from of his fancy city friends, Bei Asa pretends not to recognise her. At that, Bei Ili disowns her son. She boards a boat that then capsizes and she drowns. The apparent message of this zapal is to warn against offending your family. You might lose them and not have a chance to repair the rift. The theme of poverty and its accompanying shame in this zapal manifests itself in a modernized way with the contrast being made between city slikkers and country bumpkins. | Bunaq "zapal" is an endangered form of fairy tale-like folk story traditionally told in the family group at night before going to sleep. With the arrival of electricity and television in Bunaq villages, the traditional night time forum for telling "zapal" has been lost. As a result, children know little or nothing of this aspect of Bunaq culture; only elderly community members and some adults know individual tales from the vast canon of "zapal" that the Bunaq once had. The "zapal" encapsulate and elucidate aspects of the Bunaq world view and their environment. The documentation of "zapal" therefores provide an unique perspective on the traditional livelihoods and beliefs of the Bunaq for researchers. | ||
