Keleq Mainu pintar
Documentation of zapal 'folk stories' in Bunaq, a minority language of West Timor
Contributor (speaker):Sr. Irmgardis
Description:This zapal tells the story of a clever frog (keleq) named Mainu. Frog Mainu hears the laments of a prince of the Heavens (Pan) who longs to marry one of seven beautiful sisters of the Earth (Muk). Mainu offers to arrange a marriage for the prince by descending to earth and asking the girls. After successive attempts with the sisters, finally, the youngest of the sister agrees to marry the prince. Mainu then engineers her ascend to the heavens by making a rope from his own spit and lowering it down to the earth. Having ascended, the girl and the prince marry and it is much celebrated. The purpose of the story appears to be to underscore the importance of perseverence and to show that happiness can be found in unexpected places.
Bunaq "zapal" is an endangered form of fairy tale-like folk story traditionally told in the family group at night before going to sleep. With the arrival of electricity and television in Bunaq villages, the traditional night time forum for telling "zapal" has been lost. As a result, children know little or nothing of this aspect of Bunaq culture; only elderly community members and some adults know individual tales from the vast canon of "zapal" that the Bunaq once had. The "zapal" encapsulate and elucidate aspects of the Bunaq world view and their environment. The documentation of "zapal" therefores provide an unique perspective on the traditional livelihoods and beliefs of the Bunaq for researchers.
