Description:This zapal tells the story of the friendship between Monkey (Bei Orel) and Frog (Bei Keleq). Their friendship begins when Monkey was unable to cross a swollen river, but Frog with his great swimming and jumping ability purveyed him across. At that, Monkey swears that he will forever be Frog's friend and ally. This holds until one day Monkey finds a banana palm that has been swept down the again flooded river. Monkey enlists Frog's swimming abilities in order to retrieve the banana. They then split the tree in half. When Monkey's half fails to fruit, he steals Frog's bananas which Frog asks Monkey to retrieve because he can't climb. This zapal serves as a lesson on betrayal. Monkey's betrayal of his friendship with Frog ends in his own blinding at the hands of a vengeful Frog. Furthermore, it instructs on the manner of plant growth. Plants grow from the roots up. Monkey's choice of the top part of the banana palm (because in his reasoning that's where the fruits are) is not rewarded, while Frog's part, the bottom of the palm, bears fruit in his garden.
Bunaq "zapal" is an endangered form of fairy tale-like folk story traditionally told in the family group at night before going to sleep. With the arrival of electricity and television in Bunaq villages, the traditional night time forum for telling "zapal" has been lost. As a result, children know little or nothing of this aspect of Bunaq culture; only elderly community members and some adults know individual tales from the vast canon of "zapal" that the Bunaq once had. The "zapal" encapsulate and elucidate aspects of the Bunaq world view and their environment. The documentation of "zapal" therefores provide an unique perspective on the traditional livelihoods and beliefs of the Bunaq for researchers.
