| Description: | This recording continues with the same family as the previous recording in Mulintimí. The two women talk about daily tasks. They use notable prosody, with a high tone and extended vowels. They are peeling potatoes and shooing away ducks and chickens though much of the recording. Some local dialect variation is observable, including the pronunciation “chiri” which is “tsiri” in some areas further south. The aspirated bilabial and the fricative appear to alternate, with some very clear examples of the aspirate. The recording continues with a long informal conversation about community affairs. | |
| Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers. | ||
