Urgent video documentation of Ecuadorian Highland Quichua (a Quechuan language): focus on regions of imminent language shift
Contributor (researcher):Simeon
Coverage:Ecuador
Date:2018-10-28
Description:This recording follows up with a mother and daughter from La Chimba who participated in a previous interview. In this session the recording is at a local agricultural field. They demonstrate the harvest of the mashwa tuber, which they have planted in the last two rows of the potato field. They mention subspecies like “yana uma” and “killu” and describe how it is made into a sweet marmalade. Towards the end of the recording Floyd asks about “akapana” dust devils and one happens to pass by on the road just afterwards. Other traditions such as the precautions around encounters with “kuychi” (rainbow) when alone in the mountains.
Ecuadorian Highland Quichua is a distinct Quechuan language unique to the Ecuadorian Andes, unintelligible with any other language in the Quechuan family. It is currently undergoing rapid shift to Spanish in all regions where it is spoken, but the most extreme language shift is found in Province of Pichincha where in most indigenous communities the only speakers are of advanced age. This project continues an ongoing effort to document Ecuadorian Highland Quichua across multiple provinces. This phase of the project focuses on areas of high language endangerment in Pichincha Province and bordering areas of neighboring provinces. Participants from multiple communities collaborate in filming conversations and activities including spoken Quichua in order to create a register of linguistic diversity across different dialects and micro-varieties. The recordings are then transcribed and translated to Spanish by a team of native speaker researchers.
Sessions include conversation and activities, semi-structured in collaboration with participants.
