Description:Shadrak Kiloa and Luke Gitakulu talk about the traditional division of a village into compounds, sitting under a house by the village square in Laato village.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
Shadrak Kiloa talks to Luke Gitakulu about traditional village structure, where a village would be divided into compounds (naapou) each with its own headmen. He describes the compounds currently in existence in Laato village, and some of the rules that traditionally applied to people living within compounds and to negotiations between compounds.
Åshild Næss is recording. Shadrak Kiloa is speaking while Luke Gitakulu asks questions. The recording was transcribed and translated by Edmund Langu.
