Description:Ken Kesi and Luke Gitakulu talk about shark fishing, seated outside the researcher's accommodation in Nyimââ village.
The project documents oral texts on traditions and daily life in the Reef Islands, covering 8 villages and 73 speakers ranging in age from 15 to 93. The materials were recorded in September-October 2015.
Ken Kesi describes a traditional method of shark fishing where the shark is lured by means of a coconut-shell rattle and snared with a rope before being clubbed to death. He sings the song traditionally used to give thanks for a successful catch and explains its significance.
Åshild Næss is recording. Ken Kesi is speaking while Luke Gitakulu asks questions. The recording was transcribed and translated by Edmund Langu.
