Title:Discourse Features of Godié Narrative

Description:From the introduction: "The present study is an attempt to provide a more extensive study of Godié narrative discourse, though Gratrix and Marchese have both studied discourse, too. However, discourse analysis having developed a great deal in four decades, our theoretical stance is somewhat different from theirs. In particular, while their discourse work was mainly done in the discourse grammar perspective used in SIL (Pike, Lingacre), we adopt more of a discourse-pragmatic position. We have thus tried to apply cognitive approaches such as Lambrecht’s for information structure, used insights from Relevance Theory in our description of connectives, and drawn most heavily on Stephen Levinsohn’s eclectic approach. In presenting our analysis of Godié connectives, we have proposed some scenarios of their historical development involving their reanalysis, giving evidence for it from present language use as documented in our data corpus. Despite the shortcomings that these scenarios may have, we found them worth presenting to fellow linguists, especially those working in Kru languages, while experts of historical linguistics might still find them stimulating and worth considering." Appendix E is a large collection of vernacular texts. From the Preliminary Remark: "...[U]nfortunately for those who do not read French at all, the free translation of the vernacular texts is in French. I trust that anyone who needs to know the English equivalent of the French free translation will find someone to provide it for him/her."
