Title:Sociolinguistic Survey of the Numana, Numbu, Aninka, and Ningye of Kaduna State, Nigeria
Abstract:From 29 November to 8 December 2006, a sociolinguistic survey team visited the Sanga Local Government Area of south-eastern Kaduna State, Nigeria to gather data to help the Numana peoples and other interested parties determine how many (and which) of their speech varieties need development in order to ensure that all Numana peoples have access to literature that they will be able to understand well. The team conducted interviews and made observations among the Numana, Numbu, and Aninka [ISO 639-3 identifier: nbr], and Ningye [nns] concerning the peoples‟ self-identities, the vitality of their speech varieties, the likely acceptability of using literature in related varieties, and the probability of local project support. Each group has their own sense of identity, but they accept “Numana” as their overarching identity. Although most of these people are bilingual in Hausa, the Numana, Aninka, and Ningye vernaculars all appear to be vital. Children are still speaking the Numbu dialect as well, but the Numbu people seem to believe that their own dialect will soon die out. Intelligibility testing showed high levels of intelligibility between the Numana, Numbu, and Aninka dialects. However, Ningye is not intelligible to the Numana or the Numbu, although the Aninka seem to understand their Ningye neighbours fairly well. On the other hand, the Ningye appear to understand Aninka and Numbu well, but Numana only marginally. All groups seem motivated to develop their language.
