| Abstract: | This myth narrates the origin of the ritual called "sɯ˧kʰɯ˩", which is conducted after the decease of a woman who got married and therefore left the house where she was born. Marriage stands in contradiction to the earlier Na family structure: traditionally, children spent their entire lives in their mother's home, together with their relatives on the mother's side (their brothers and sisters, their mother's brothers and sisters, their cousins on the mother's side, and so on). One aspect of the "sɯ˧kʰɯ˩" ritual is that it conveys the wound that virilocal marriage inflicts on the bride's family, insofar as it loosens the ties between a woman and her original home. | |
