This recording arose as a result of discussions of the translation of nst-mai_20120219_04_SM_JVC_Mansam_MaitaiHistory, at around 2’00”. This is the story of the tiger carrying the Tangsa people across the river. According to Tonwang, the tiger was very tired from carrying people across all day, and then an old man brought a leaf to sweep/brush the tiger’s skin. When other people saw this they gave them the name Maitai, where maiL means ‘to sweep clean’ and taiH refers to the tiger.
