Title:JM-20130525-Ethnolinguistic-ornithology
thnolinguistic ornithology: Documenting bird names and stories in the Morehead District, PNG
Contributor (researcher):Dr. Julia Colleen Miller
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Description:Paper presented at the Languages of Melanesia Workshop, 23-26 May 2013, Kiola Campus, ANU This talk describes one aspect of the Nen/Kómnzo DOBES documentation team’s August 2012 trip to the Morehead District of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, specifically focusing on the collection of bird names. Facilitated by Dr. Chris Healey, a social anthropologist specializing in traditional ecological knowledge, the bird walks covered much of the surrounding areas of Bimadbn (Nen language), Rouku (Kómnzo language) and Wando (Warta Thuntai language). For this presentation, I will target the work done at Bimadbn with Jimmy Nébni, Bimadbn’s local language specialist. The bird walks were an engaging, natural elicitation environment for collecting fluent, unscripted language as well as carefully pronounced target words. Armed with a headmounted microphone, a shot‐gun microphone, various cameras and a pack of eager local bird spotters, our team collected hours of birdsong, speaker commentary, including physical descriptions and habits of the birds, heated discussions by the bird spotters, high‐quality recordings of bird names in language and, when possible, in English, and short stories about the birds we were hearing. Benefits of this collaboration were seen immediately. Community interest was very high; multiple generations were able to join the activities. We collected high quality recordings to use for phonetic analysis & ornithological taxonomy, ample amounts of connected speech to continue our grammatical analyses and exciting stories for community language materials (picture books, dictionaries, storybooks). Included in this talk will be a selection of photos to set the scene, excerpts of audio commentary and birdsong, extracts from short stories in Nen and Kómnzo, and examples of phonetic transcriptions of a selection of Nen bird names.
