Title:Collection of Slave letters
Slave letters collection
Description:Seven slave letters in which the faith of the writer is declared. The first is from 1738, the last one from 1762.
These letters have been written by various slaves from St. Thomas (and two from St. Croix: 1760 Nathanael and 1762 Mari Magdalene) who had converted themselves to Christianity and participated in the Moravian mission. Some of them had learnt to write from the missionaries, also writing letters for other slaves who dictated their message to them. Sometimes the slaves dictated their letters to the missionaries. These letters were discovered in the 1980s by Peter Stein, and have been published in Van Rossem & Van der Voort (1996). The letters have been included here as they were printed in Van Rossem & Van der Voort, 1996). The letters range from 1738 to 1762.
The language in the letters shows influence from Dutch to varying degrees, probably due to a believe that a prestigious act as writing required a more prestigious language than the slaves' spoken Negerhollands.
