Description:		This manuscript dictionary is the third edition of 'Neger-Englisches Worterbuch' [Negro-English Dictionary'], dated April 1783. It was first transcribed by Kramp (1983) and later corrected and digitalized by Adrienne Bruyn at the University of Amsterdam. It is a sophisticated dictionary, as it not only includes translations of Sranan words and lists varieties of Sranan, but it also includes information on the different senses a word can convey, its uses and its (grammatical) functions. He further includes information on flora and fauna, cultural customs and religious practices (see also Kramp 1983). Really remarkable is the fact that he worked with one or several consultants, who are quoted throughout the dictionary int he first person plural.
		From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens.
		Christian Ludwig Schumann, a Moravian Brother or Hernhutter, was born on 28 September 1749 in Pilgerhut, Berbice (Guyana). He received training in theology in Germany. He stayed in several places in Suriname from 1776 until 1783, learning Amerindian languages as well as Sranan and Saramaccan. In addition to this religious duties, he worked on dictionaries and bible translations in Sranan and Saramaccan during his stay.
