Description:SK and AM chat while the collector sets up for the next session. The purpose of recording this is to capture natural, spontaneous conversation. They may not be aware that the camera is running.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = '', Discursive = '', Performance = ''. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
SK and AM chat while the collector sets up for the next session. It represents natural, spontaneous conversation. This session precedes AM's chanting "cho7cho7"(?)
Lacandon is the only languge spoken in this sesion.
AM and SK chat. The collector is the only other person present. She does not participate in the speech event.
SK is one of CK and KP's younger children. He was born in Naha and has lived there all his life. He still lives at home, with his new wife NI. He provides the bulk of the Lacandon-Spanish translations, and is present during many sessions recorded with AM.
AM is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandones who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus.
The collector of this session data is also responsible for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
