Description: | Consultants discuss the following: a picture of nineteenth-century French stone crackers; a picture of men cobbling a road; Guernsey French and French, attitudes, their son who is has a position in a bank which requires him to travel to the other Channel Islands (they talk about his experiences whilst in Sark (a stolen Bike, some direct speech) and Jersey (surfing)); their grandson who is musical; a picture taken in a quarry during the 1800s; children’s chances of learning to speak Guernsey French at home/school. FG02 further talks about seams of gravel (rubbish) which are sometimes found in the quarry face; crushed stone; the quarry industry; FG02’s brother (Henri Girard) who kept horses at La Mazotte (some direction instructions) in the Vale and who was filmed by a ‘historian’ from Paris (the recording is in an archive somewhere the consultants have a VHS copy); FG01 talks about stone setts (picture stimulus); other speakers of Guernesiais (sometimes people ask FG02 for the names of things for which they have forgotten); description of ‘stick men’ pictures of people in the park and garden; a photo of three men weeding with hand weeders in field; sowing seed in fields (some imperative language); names of vegetables and cooking; painting/decorating the house; FG05’s sister who visits on a and lives at Le Platon residential home; words for kind/friendly; types of soup; linguistic variety in Guernesiais; JG02 talks about her family property at Les Pointes, Torteval; the greenhouse next to their home; former small local grocery shops around St. Peter’s and Torteval; reminiscences of being children and buying ice cream; the decline in the growing industry; meal times (direct speech), working hours; getting to work on a bike in the snow; finding work (direct speech); building with bricks and their erosion; fireplaces built in stone; houses for sale and prices; building costs in the past. | |
