| Description: | This community meeting was held in the Itap parking lot, Echang, Koror, PW, the site of many community meetings and other events. About 40 adults plus many children attended the meeting which began with a prayer. Wayne Andrew spoke. Peter W. Black gave a progress report on the state of the Documenting Ramari Hatohobei project. Then, in turn, progress reports were given by officers of the Hatohobei Sports & Youth Organization, the Hatohobei Women’s Association, and the Helen Reef Resource Management Project. A closing prayer was said. Refreshments were served. One recording, tb48-04169-yyy-2014-05-18.mp4, was made by Barbara W. Black and lasts approximately three hours. The other three recordings [tb48-04170-yyy-2014-05-18.mp4, tb48-04171-yyy-2014-05-18.mp4, and tb48-04172-yyy-2014-05-18.mp4] were made by Monica Bismarck. They have not been transcribed. Because of technical difficulties experienced by each of the two separate recordings being made of this event, we are left with: one three-hour tape, of which perhaps the first 90 minutes are useful. three shorter tapes (totaling approximately 75 minutes). | Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk. | ||
