This study is a report of an experiment investigating the prosodic system of Lizu (Tibeto-Burman). Lizu combines lexical tone on monosyllabic words with a hybrid system of tone and stress on polysyllabic words and compounds. The phonemic status of the lexical tones is supported by minimal pair evidence, but no comparable evidence has been found for the prominence patterns. The goal of the experiment is to seek evidence for the validity of the tripartite classification of the prominence patterns. The experiment is based on 15 near- minimal triplets of disyllabic words. The duration, intensity, and f0 of each word were extracted using Praat and superimposed over a disyllabic sequence /aa/. Ten native Lizu speakers listened to the synthesized stimuli and identified which word, among three choices per triplet, they heard. Results showed a well-above-chance level of correct identification rate (76%), thereby lending support to the tripartite classification of the prominence patterns in this language. | |
