Title:Preparing Medicine For a New Born Baby
0305-Preparing Medicine For a New Born Baby
Contributor:Jason Topasana
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2012-09-13
Description:The speaker describes how he has been giving bush medicine to his sister's child over the last few days. He takes the leaves of a particular tree, crushes them, squeezes them and boils the juice. Then he gives it to his sister and her child to drink. On the day that the recording was made, he also gave the child medicine made from the root of another tree. The purpose of this medicine is to "clean" the child so that it will grow up well. The speaker then briefly describes the female initiation ritual.
