Title:The Cannibal to Oromarina (Edward and Desmond Tokima's Version)
0305-The Cannibal to Oromarina (Edward and Desmond Tokima's Version)
Contributor:Desmond Tokima
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2012-12-06
Description:A mother and daughter went into the bush to collect a plant called "atsio". Having found some "atsio", they came to a settlement inhabited by two devils - a husband and wife. The husband was To Oromarina, but he had gone into the bush when the mother and daughter arrived. His wife warned them that he would kill them and eat them. She told them to hide under some rubbish, and not to be afraid or to move about if they heard anything. To Oromarina came home and smelt the mother and daughter. His wife told him the smell was coming from some bones she had thrown in the rubbish. She fed him and he went to sleep. The next day he went back into the bush. His wife told the mother and daughter to hurry home. She gave them a basket of snakes and a basket of birds. They were to release the animals to distract To Oromarina. When To Oromarina came home, he smelt the mother and daughter and set off in pursuit of them. However, he chased all the snakes and birds that they had released, and became tired. When the mother and daughter got home, their people washed them and cut their hair. To Oromarina returned home, but the mother and daughter died. Nowadays, in a place in the bush, To Oromarina's spear grows like a bamboo plant.
