Title:How the Rombu Fish Got its Spines
0305-How the Rombu Fish Got its Spines
Contributor:David Rarapiria Sanabuts
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:2012-10-29
Description:David's brother, Andrew Erori, used to tell him this story when they were small. Tokis, a sort of devil, wanted to make a particular woman his wife. One day she went and sat on the beach. Tokis, having transformed into the Rombu fish, managed to abduct her. He took her to his cave. She had been pregnant when he kidnapped her, and she gave birth in the cave. Her son grew up, and figured out a way to escape. When they were paddling away in a canoe, Tokis turned into Rombu again, and began to spit water into the canoe to try to sink it. However, they managed to reach home. Tokis was still chasing them in the form of Rombu. The men came down to the shore and killed him with their spears. The spines of the Rombu fish are the spears of the men who killed him.
