Description: | This is the second of a series of video recording made during the first celebration of a ritual reception the Ngun villagers wanted to grant Pierpaolo Di Carlo. This video file has been shot with a fixed camera mounted on top of a small mound at the edge of the Ngun palace square. After the chief sits down on his ritual stool, followed by the other men of influence and the guest of honor, the village children sing the Cameroon's national anthem. Subsequently, the Ngun women of influence (members of the secret society called ishaam@) perform a ritual of welcome for the foreigner: his feet are rubbed with camwood powder (Baphia nitida) and he is then given a necklace made of sacred leaves. Then, Mr. Vincent Ndjah, a man with some political aspirations from the Ndin quarter, makes a discourse (in a local English) in which he emphasizes what the village expects from the foreigner. The video ends with a performance of laN@, an apparently lyrics-less music genre (typical of Ngun and of few other neighboring villages, if any) characterized by the use of flute-like instruments accompanied by a drum and horn. | |
