Description: | Conversation between Alha and Valya in kitchen while drinking tea. Music is from neighbours through the party wall. She lives with adult children and grandchildren in 3-room flat (duplex) in Sovkhoz, which is not on the heating system. The kitchen has a large Russian stove that heats water for a local heating system. The kitchen was very warm and cozy, while the other room we went to was cool, perhaps 18C. We arrived about 2 pm. I let the recorder warm up 15 minutes and then turned it on. I first asked if I could record her on the camera. She demurred and I suggested just the audio recorder. She did not protest. I explained our project and Valya talked a lot in Koryak. She made tea with zavarka as was common in the 90s, but rare now that everyone uses teabags. Bread was cut and drying on a tray on the wood stove, stale bread to make into melba toast of sorts before it molds. There was a pot of something up on the brick part of the back of the stove (just one brick up from metal cook-top), which was most likely soup for lunch just eaten. When I told her that I was from America, she laughed and said that she thought I was a Palaner. She was wearing a fleece zip sweater that had cream and brown bands. The light brown bands had square swirls along the sides. The cream bands had tan fir trees and black reindeer along them. It was nice. Reindeer seaters have a completely different semiotic in Kamchatka. | |
