Description:Lucy continues to describe how the Education Unit of the Kelabit Association - Rurum Kelabit Sarawak or RKS - help to promote and preserve the Kelabit language. In this recording, Lucy describes the Kelabit language camps that were organised in Miri so that children who didn't speak the language could come and stay somewhere for a few nights and practice Kelabit songs and greetings. They also learnt to read in Kelabit using the spelling system that was devised by Lian Labang, Lucy's son. Another aim of the Education Unit that Lucy describes is to document and preserve the Kelabit language, Kelabit stories and information about the Kelabit community so that they can build up an archive. She explains that the Education Unit would like to keep a record of all the Kelabit children who went to university and discusses a plan to create a foundation for Kelabit children who need financial support. Finally, she mentions that the Education Unit was also set up to help find and support researchers, either from the community or outside researchers, to come and do research about the Kelabit language and culture. She mentions a project with Deakin University to build a museum in Bario which has since been built and hosts exhibitions about the Kelabit history and culture. The discussion in this recording follows from Part 1 (BAR21082014CH_08). The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, lavallier mic, wind gag, Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens. The recording is in mono and wav format.
This is a project documenting and describing the Kelabit language of Northern Sarawak, Malaysia. It includes directed elicitation sessions and naturalistic texts in a range of genres, transcribed and translated in ELAN. The project was funded by a scholarship from the Wolfson Foundation
