Description:Garawat tells the story of Dayang Beladan (the tortoise). She has a banana garden but notices that a marten (ngaley) keeps coming to steal her fruit. So she sets a trap and when she catches the marten she makes his bones into a musical instrument (ruding). She loves the instrument and plays it night and day. One day, a monkey (kuyad) comes down from the trees and hears her playing. He likes the sound so much that he decides to take the instrument for himself and steals it whilst Dayang Beladan is asleep. Dayang Beladan is very upset but along comes an ant (rera') to help her get the instrument back. He climbs up the tree and bites the monkey who then lets go of the instrument. It falls into a pond only to be eaten by a tadpole (lebetuh) but it swims too close to the reeds and Dayang Beladan is able to get her instrument back. The monkey comes back again but she is able to keep him at bay and lives happily ever after. The story was told in Pa Dalih but using the dialect of Kelabit spoken in Bario/Pa Main. The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, Lavalier Mic, wind gag, Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens.
This is a project documenting and describing the Kelabit language of Northern Sarawak, Malaysia. It includes directed elicitation sessions and naturalistic texts in a range of genres, transcribed and translated in ELAN. The project was funded by a scholarship from the Wolfson Foundation
