Description:David tells a story about the mouse deer (pelanuk) and how he tricks humans and other animals in order to stay alive. In this story, the mouse deer tells the human that he should leave him be and that he can recognise him by the white strip underneath his chin (which all mouse deer have). This way, the humans leave all mouse deer alone because they think it is the one they already met. Only when they see two mouse deer together do they realise that they have been tricked. David reflects that this story was told to young children to make them behave. The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, Lavalier Mic, wind gag, JVC video camera.
This is a project documenting and describing the Kelabit language of Northern Sarawak, Malaysia. It includes directed elicitation sessions and naturalistic texts in a range of genres, transcribed and translated in ELAN. The project was funded by a scholarship from the Wolfson Foundation
