Description:A semi-structured elicitation session in which Charlotte and Florance discuss verbs and verbal morphology in Kelabit as spoken in Bario/Pa' Main. In this recording, Charlotte and Florance use the list of inchoative/causative verb pairs in Haspelmath (1993: 97) as a basis for eliciting verbal roots and testing whether the transitivising and detransitivising morphology identified in Asmah's (1983) sketch of Kelabit could be applied to the respective roots. This includes voice morphology. Among others, the following verbs from the list were discussed: 'get up', 'break', 'burn', 'die/kill', 'open' and 'close'. There is discussion of the following affixes: N- (AV transitive), -in- (UV perfective transitive), peN- (IV transitive), pe- (reciprocal), pere- (reflexive), ne- (accidental) and -em- (volitional intransitive). The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, Stereo Mic, wind gag. The recording is in stereo and wav format.
This is a project documenting and describing the Kelabit language of Northern Sarawak, Malaysia. It includes directed elicitation sessions and naturalistic texts in a range of genres, transcribed and translated in ELAN. The project was funded by a scholarship from the Wolfson Foundation
Charlotte and Florance use the list of verbs in Haspelmath (1993) paper on inchoative/causative alternations as the basis for eliciting verbal roots and derived forms. The following verbs are discussed: tu'i 'wake up', mila' 'break', matey/ngatey 'die/kill', meseb/ngeseb 'burn' ngukab 'open' and natek 'close'. For each verb, intransitive and transitive alternations, as well as voice alternations are discussed. There is also some discussion of the prefixes pe- and pere-.
