Description: | This is a video recording of a soccer game but it is also more than that. The Andamang boys wanted to have their soccer practice recorded and so I brought the camera with me to the soccer field located near Akapmay. Prior to recording, Anton, Frank, and Damien insisted on creating a structure out of bush materials to protect the camera from the sun which was extremely hot that day. Some Chini men and I sit on the sidelines (just off to the right of the frame) and watch the boys practice. This practice was an important part of a number of events and activities geared toward storing up male strength prior to a soccer tournament. It is interesting not only because of the game itself but also the delicate light it sheds on the place in Chini society for boys who do not live entirely within normative standards. Although they are perfectly accepted members of Chini society, neither Riki nor Wesli (who can both be considered 'non normative' in two unrelated ways) join the game per se but are active in its margins. Wesli paces around the game, eventually setting fires to the dead grass in the periphery. Riki is tasked with retrieving the soccer ball when it goes out of bounds. What is also special about this recording is when a few young boys commandeer the camera area for awhile and give their own play-by-play of the game as it happens, and then decide to have some fun with the camera, running and skipping in front of it. Mostly in Tok Pisin but nevertheless sheds valuable insight on the culture and some candid shots of personalities in the village. Total audiovisual duration [1:08:16]. | |
