Description:This video recording summarizes the crucial moments of the traditional marriage in Santa Cruz Island. Nowadays, the traditional marriage is still practiced, but it is generally followed by the Christian one, which is regarded as the most important one. Traditionally, Santa Cruz marriages are arranged. The relatives of the groom meet those of the bride to negotiate the amount of money to "buy" the woman, the bride price. After collecting the money which has been agreed upon, the family of the groom needs to make the money transaction. This video opens with the arrival of the groom's family, extended family members and other bigmen to Nemboi, the native village of the bride. The groom and his family belong to another close village called Banyë. The female relatives of the groom march the bride price to the bride's home. The arrival and the money transaction is announced by the blowing of the conch shell. Once the transaction is made, one of the bigmen of the bride's village give the conch shell players some SBD dollars to make them stop. After this, there is a big feast organized by the bride family members with all the relatives of both sides. The bride wears a lava lava on her shoulders to cover herself and some white powder is put on her head. The white powder is also put on the head of all the other women attending the ceremony. The investigator thanks the whole community, the bride Estrela and her family for this short video.
